Artist Statement
How can we define the spaces between us?

Biography
Robby Herbst is an inter-disciplinary artist. His work explores ways language informs social and political movements. His art takes the form of; drawing, publication, organizing, group-work, and object making. He instigates the geographically sited critical-landscape projects of the Llano Del Rio Collective. In 2016 he completed the public project New New Games, a series of events in California’s Bay Area, supported by Southern Exposure and Headlands Center For The Arts. It explored contemporary forms of worker subjectivities through historic and contemporary forms of play. A concurrent exhibition of drawings was held at Commonwealth & Council gallery. In 2015 he co-organized Chats About Change; encounters addressing social change and social practice in Los Angeles supported by LACE and CalState LA. He’s a co-founder of the Journal of Aesthetics & Protest. He’s been awarded a Mike Kelly Foundation grant, a Warhol Arts Writer’s Grant, the Graue Award, funds form Danish Arts Council, the Durfee foundation, and Rema Hort Mann. He’s been an artist in residence at the Headlands, Villa Montalvo, ACRE, and Provisions Library.

Artist Statement
 In 2017 I created the infinite: Glossary of Terms and Symbols, an ongoing illustrated guide that describes the personal and political symbolism for each recurring form in my work. The glossary entries— such as knots, braids, combs and arches— communicate an ideology focused on movement, the body and disrupting binaries. The shapes develop intuitively: I sketch imagery directly from my unconscious; when a specific form recurs I take note, develop a definition, and make a sculpture. I use clay, which is fluid and moldable in its wet state, but fires to a hard permanence, creating lasting monuments for each concept. The sculpture and flag on display for Drive-By-Art display the Interlocking form, a shape that resembles holding hands. Interlocking symbolizes a search for empathy, touch and connection, and seems especially significant in this time of the pandemic.

Biography
Julia Haft-Candell is a Los Angeles-based artist working in ceramic sculpture. After receiving her BA in Studio Art and International Relations from University of California Davis, followed by an MFA from California State University Long Beach, Haft-Candell attended the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in 2016. She has been awarded grants from Center for Cultural Innovation, Los Angeles; The Hoff Foundation, Huntington Beach, California; and most recently the California Community Foundation Fellowship in 2019. The artist’s solo and two-person exhibitions include Julia Haft-Candell / Suzan Frecon (2019) and Julia Haft-Candell: the infinite (2017) at Parrasch Heijnen Gallery; Double Knot (2016) at Ochi Projects, Los Angeles; Farewell Ruins (2013) at  Inman Gallery, Houston; and Terrains (2013) and Julia Haft-Candell at ACME (2011) at ACME, Los Angeles. Recent group shows include Melting Point (2018) at the Craft Contemporary, Los Angeles and Brightsiders (2017) at Verge Center for the Arts, Sacramento, among others.

Reflections
Consumerism, greed, paranoia and fear are really not new in the pandemic climate. It is, however, more prominent than I can recall it ever having been. While I have been looking at survivalism and escapism as a theme in my work for years, it looks very different now. Survivalists are merely cosplayers with wooden guns and carefully curated militant costumes. The line between hopeless geek and hardcore militia member is suddenly blurred to the point that they are indistinguishable from one another. It seems clear that if Penelope Spheeris was to remake The Decline of Western Civilization today, she would have to focus on this moment right now.

Artist Statement
I am interested in poltergeists. Not as they are described in film, but rather as they are described in science: a psychic projection of emotion onto an object or environment. Here, projections of memory, experience, emotion and desire collapse and manifest itself as sagging stains and artifacts embedded into a surface. These recalled surfaces play with themes of landscape, escapism, survivalism (prepping) and tramping.

Biography
Chet Glaze was born in 1976 in Fontana CA. After five years as an Explosive Ordnance Disposal Technician (EOD) in the US Army, he attended college at CSU San Bernardino (2004) and later received his MFA from UC Santa Barbara in 2006. He is a member of the Los Angeles art collective Boys of Summer (BO$) and has had exhibitions at Patrick Painter Inc, Cerritos College, Guggenheim Gallery at Chapman, Moma PS1, UCR Sweeney Gallery. Glaze is currently an Associate Professor of Art at Mt. San Jacinto College.

Artist Statement
Shahla Friberg’s faceted creations are conceived and formed through a meditative, organic process. Beginning with a broad intention, she meticulously builds her pieces guided solely by intuition and instinct, allowing each object to unfold and develop into whatever her hands decide. She cuts varied pieces of glass into shards, some mirrored, others colored, ultimately connecting them to one another at differing angles using molten solder and copper foil, similar to a traditional stained glass technique. Imagining rigid materials, like metal and glass, finally assembled into something gracefully fluid seems counterintuitive to the inherent properties of these materials, however, Friberg’s comfort with her unyielding medium renders the outcome as effortless as her proc
ess.

Friberg has been making work since 1996, beginning with photography, eventually using an old Holga camera to create multi-exposed images that were later shown in an exhibition called diamond dust. In 2006, she started to experiment with painting, employing mediums such as enamel and furniture paint until she finally settled on using oils. Her paintings were included in the exhibition she produced titled the blessed event, alongside Chris Cuseo, Mark Maggiori, and Norman Reedus. Friberg launched her conceptual jewelry line Ludevine in 2009, and although she prefers not to participate in the retail realm, it was this creative venture that inspired her current focus.

Most recently several of her works in glass were featured in the highly acclaimed group show, the re-inauguration of the pleasure dome, alongside Isabelle Albuquerque, Mike Kelly, David Lachapelle, Devin b. Johnson and Gus Van Sant, curated by Ben Lee Ritchie Handler, presented by Jeffrey Deitch gallery, Nicodim Gallery and Autre Magazine for LA Frieze week 2020. She is currently preparing for a show at Marie Kirkegaard gallery in Copenhagen, opening spring 2020.

Biography
Shahla Friberg (born in Toronto, Canada, 1978) currently lives and works between Los Angeles, ca, and Skåne, Sweden. She attended Balliol College, University of Oxford, Oxford, UK (2002); New York Film Academy, New York (2003); Stella Adler Conservatory, Los Angeles, ca (2005); and L’école Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-arts, Paris, France (2011-2012). Artist Statement
The paintings investigate the figures’ relationship to the self, the other, the friend, the lover. The figures’ faces sometimes are rendered like masks, flat and stoic, to evoke a hiding of identity, molding into the background unseen. Performances are played out behind closed doors that invert their public counterparts. The environment becomes a microcosm for activity, how people interact, relate themselves to one another and the relationship between figure and object. Ambiguity — or perhaps anonymity — is meant to not only allow viewers a way to see themselves within the figures, but also to be an expression of contemporary interactions: those that are distant, voyeuristic, and fueled by anxiety surrounding technology.

Biography
Katja Farin (b. 1996, Los Angeles, CA) lives and works in Los Angeles. Farin earned a BA in Fine Art from UCLA. Her work has been featured as a Critic’s Pick in Artforum, for her first solo show at in lieu, Los Angeles. She was featured as one of Cultured Magazine’s 30 under 35 artists for 2020.

Biography
Dana Berman Duff lives and works in Los Angeles and rural Mexico. She studied at Cranbrook Academy of Art (BFA) and California Institute of the Arts (MFA). Her sculpture and drawings are included in several museum collections, such as the Museum of Modern Art, the New Museum of Contemporary Art, and the Brooklyn Museum in New York City, the Carnegie Museum, Pittsburgh, and the Phillips Collection, in Washington D.C., as well as in a number of private collections. In 2019 her large multi-channel video installation titled “What Does She See When She Shuts Her Eyes” (in collaboration with Sabina Ott) was mounted at Aspect Ratio in Chicago and Alchemy Moving Image Festival in Scotland. Her works in small format film and video have been screened in numerous festivals including the Toronto International Film Festival, International Film Festival Rotterdam, the Biennale de l’Image en Mouvement (Geneva), Edinburgh International Film Festival, ExIS Festival (Seoul), Experiments in Cinema (Albuquerque), Rencontres Internationales (Paris/Berlin), Cairo International Film Festival, Dortmund/Cologne International Women’s Film Festival, San Francisco Cinematheque, and many more. “The Gringas” was winner of Best Documentary Feature at the 2014 Mexico International Film Festival. An evening of her short films has been scheduled at the REDCAT theater in Disney Hall (Los Angeles) for fall 2020. A long-time educator, Duff taught at UNC, NYU, Bennington College, Art Center in Pasadena, UCLA, and at Otis College for 23 years, where she was the founding Program Director of Sculpture/New Genres.

Artist Statement
LED Astray is a text-based piece capitalizing on a “ticker-tape” LED sign installed in the entry deck of an up-slope residence, visible for both pedestrian and auto traffic. This sign has been messaging passers-by for over 15 years, but has taken on new resonance with the Covid-19 quarantine. For Drive-By-Art, the read-out will vary daily, with a thoughts, and perhaps some advice, on weathering quarantine times.

The work of deegan-day design llc explores the merger of new design methods and advanced projection technologies. We are interested in both the practical and utopian extremes of architectural speculation, especially the myriad ways space and geometry orchestrate vision. Many designs map and reconfigure the fast-evolving ‘scopic economies’ of privacy, surveillance, exhibition and display. Current projects include a Media Center at Columbia College Hollywood and residential work throughout southern California.

Stephen Neidich’s kinetic sculptures are made of industrial metal objects and tools found in the studio and the outside world. They leverage our familiarity of everyday objects against experience and performance of making art. These gestural spinning and rotating sculptures make plain how, and from what materials they are made, the acrobatics of their production.

Biography
Stephen Neidich was born in New York City and currently lives and works in Los Angeles. His work spans installation, sculpture. He received a BA from Brown University and an MFA from CalArts. Neidich most recently had a solo exhibition at Wilding Cran, Los Angeles; his work has also been exhibited at Night Gallery, The Underground Museum, Nicodim Gallery Los Angeles, Hilde, Chimento Contemporary, Anat Ebgi and LA><ART in Los Angeles, Kunsthalle Vienna, Kunsthalle Galapagos, Berlin and at 211 Elizabeth Street in New York City, amongst others. His work has been featured in Art Forum, CARLA, Artillery Magazine, and Wallpaper Magazine. He is currently represented by Wilding Cran.

Artist Statement
These works embody the artist’s ongoing interest in the unique relationship between the city of Los Angeles and its natural surroundings. Succulents plucked from her garden are dipped in a ceramic shell, where they remain, serving as an indicator of resilience amid seeming fragility.

Anita Bunn’s work is an investigation into the act of noticing, of turning away from spectacle and the obvious. She seeks out the subtle shifts in perception that occur over time and through repetition, allowing for different ways of looking at an object and crystallizing the complexity and nuance that exist within a seemingly simple construct. Through photography, digital video, printmaking, and sculpture, Anita explores an ongoing interest in the unique relationship between the city of Los Angeles and its natural surroundings, and the ways in which objects negotiate shared space within a sprawling urban environment.

Biography
Anita Bunn is a teaching artist living and working in Los Angeles. Anita shows her work both nationally and internationally, including exhibits in Europe, Asia, and Mexico. She is in many public and private collections, including the Wallace Annenberg Department of Photography at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the Capitol Group.
